US meddling in poll row, says Iran

Iran has accused the United States of "intolerable" meddling in its internal affairs, alleging for the first time that Washington has fuelled a bitter post-election dispute.

State TV said the Tehran government had summoned the Swiss ambassador, who represents US interests in Iran, to complain about American interference.

A state-run English language channel quoted the government as calling Western interference "intolerable".

The two countries broke off diplomatic relations after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, an amateur video showed thousands marching along an overpass in the capital in support of pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi's campaign to force a re-run of the disputed presidential election.

Mr Mousavi has accused the government of rigging the election in favour of hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

An even larger protest is expected on Thursday, which Mr Mousavi has designated a day of mourning for the eight people killed after Monday's demonstration.

Earlier, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei spoke about the unrest for the first time.

In a meeting with the candidates' representatives, he said: "In the elections, voters had different tendencies, but they equally believe in the ruling system and support the Islamic Republic.

"Nobody should take any action that would create tension and all have to explicitly say they are against tension and riots."
