Creature Feature: Oh deer me

Keeper Laura Robbins and Mini-Maggie.

KEEPERS stepped in to save a baby reindeer when its mum failed to produce enough milk.

Mini-Maggie received goat’s milk – the nearest alternative to her mother’s milk – and was given artificial colostrum, the rich milk needed by newborn mammals to promote good health and development, shortly after her birth.

Staff started to introduce the youngster to solids and reduce her bottle feeds at around eight weeks.

Zoo deputy curator Richard Brown said: “Although she was bottle fed, she always remained in the paddock with her mum to enable her to bond with her family group.”
