Revealed: First images of Birmingham's Eastside plans

There will be Park Street Gardens on the site of the old burial ground, then Serpentine Garden in front of the new Birmingham City University building.

The “knuckle” of the park will be City Park Square which will be a gathering point with space for events and will have a tiered area which could be used for seating.

Outside Millennium Point will be the Science Garden and next to that the Formal Garden with a “waved” lawn and flowerbeds with plants and flowers reflecting the four seasons with something in bloom throughout the year.

Birmingham Eastside

At the end of the park will be Canal Gardens which will be sloping down to the waterway.

Mr Singleton said running the entire length of the park and linking all the different gardens would be the water feature, a promenade and pathway.

The water feature will include a shallow stream people could walk through without getting their feet wet due to an ingenious design.

Committee chairman Coun Timothy Huxtable said the park was probably going to be nicknamed “the hockey stick” because of its shape.

But he said a better idea would be to run a competition, either in schools or in the Birmingham Post and Mail, to find a proper name for the park.

The new Eastside development is slowly taking place. When it is completed it will have a four star hotel and 4,600 apartments and shops in the Curzon Street development.

It will also be the new home for Birmingham City University and Birmingham magistrates court which is being moved from its current location in Corporation Street to a new eye-catching building.
