I AM delighted to see that blackberries and other favourite foraging targets are ready for the taking. Slightly early, these fresh and nutritious freebies are welcomed in our house as extra tart blackberry smoothies and crumbles. Going out with friends and family, or for a quiet walk alone, there is an added sense of achievement when returning with pocketfuls of nature’s bounty to supplement a larder mainly filled with shop-bought, mass produced fayre. In addition, I’ve always felt that eating blackberries or raspberries etc straight off the bushes helps store up nutrients for the coming winter months. Not sure how scientific this is, but there’s certainly something instinctive about it. Parts of this route provide a generous yield and has been well trodden by my family during many a jam season.
