Sean Lock plans a film about comedians

Sean Lock

IT may be the stand-up version of selling coals to Newcastle, but comic Sean Lock is planning to unleash a movie about - you've guessed it, comedians.

Sean has been something of a familiar face on television recently.

He wrote and starred in the cult BBC sitcom 15 Storeys High and has also been a regular on Channel 4 as team captain on 8 Out Of 10 Cats and the host of TV Heaven Telly Hell.

But, although Birmingham comedy fans will see him in stand-up action at the city's Hippodrome Theatre on April 6, he has something altogether different planned when the tour ends.

He told me: "I am working on a film script at the moment. It's about comedians, about stand-up comics, because I always feel they are under-represented in the media. They always seem to be portrayed as shallow, selfish, cynical, and bitter, and I want to put that straight."

Sean has been commissioned by Film Four, which he says is "pretty exciting", but admits he is not getting too carried away because nine out of ten film scripts never get made.

He knows all about those sort of statistics having been a team captain on 8 Out of 10 Cats throughout its television run. Recording is due to start on the sixth series in June.

But TV Heaven, Telly Hell, which Sean hosted, has not been renewed by Channel 4 after two series.

Sean embarked on his first UK stand-up tour in four years last Autumn but missed out places like Birmingham.

"I've been doing live stand-up for 18 years and just wanted to go back to it. It was difficult being back on stage at first. You take it for granted but then, when you haven't done it for a while, you think 'I must be mad', but then you start to enjoy it again."

Sean Lock is at the Birmingham Hippodrome on Sunday April 6. Tickets priced £17.50 are available from www.birminghamhippodrome.com or by phoning 0870 730 1234.
