David Gray @ NIA

DAVID Gray, often criticised for serving up bland, middle-of-the-road fare, played to a full Birmingham NIA, delighting the crowd.

While he doesn't do much to counteract the bullyboy taunts, what he does do is excel at what he's good at - quality songwriting (you don't win two Ivor Novello awards for nothing).

Alibi, Freedom, This Years Love and Sail Away all try manfully to wrestle the crowd away from Babylon, their favourite, and it is indeed his most rousing song by far.

While the other songs can begin to merge after a while, Babylon stands proud, and rightly so.

Support from rising star Ray LaMontagne demonstrated that the condemned Top of the Pops can still showcase exceptional talent, following his recent spot.
