John Tams and Barry Coope @ Huntingdon Hall, Worcester

VETERAN John Tams's stock on the folk scene has never been higher.

Winner of three categories at this year's prestigious BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, including Folk Singer of the Year, the Derbyshire-based singer/songwriter is firmly established as one of the finest performers around.

Playing here with his old friend and sparring partner Barry Coope on keyboards and backing vocals, Tams served up an excellent mixture of t raditional and contemporary material.

Tams, whose dry humour, honesty and integrity shone through, is not only a fine songwriter, he also has an excellent voice.

The audience was disappointing but folk fans who stayed away missed a real treat.
