Jerry Lee Lewis @ Wolverhampton Civic

"JUST point me to the piano and give me my money. In 15 minutes I'll have 'em shakin', shoutin'and shiverin'."

That's a brave boast for a 70-year-old pensioner, even though the one in question is rock 'n' roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis.

Would one of music's original hellraisers be shiverin' and shakin' for all the wrong reasons these days?

I began to wonder when his band launched into their fourth song and there was still no sign of the star.

Then suddenly Lewis appeared and all was forgiven as he launched into rock 'n' roll classic Roll Over Beethoven.

Age may have sedated the man known as "Killer"(he sat largely motionless at his piano throughout the set) but boy can he still play the keyboard.

Fans jived at the back of the Civic as he rattled through Chantilly Lace and Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On - "I wish I could hear what was going on," the star quipped.

Great Balls of Fire brought a standing ovation. But after less than an hour he was gone. There was no encore.

Whether fans felt they'd had their money's worth is debatable. But it's clear many were happy just to spend time, however short, in the presence of one of rock 'n' roll's trailblazers.
