Maximo Park @ Carling Academy Birmingham

A SOLD-OUT Birmingham Academy was treated to a quality live set, as Maximo Park played a stormer.

With a 2005 Mercury Music Award nomination to their name, there seems nothing that these boys from the North East aren't capable of.

Personable and talented, frontman Paul Smith gives an introductory insight to every song.

Their set is firmly built upon their brilliant debut, A Certain Trigger, an album worthy of a set all to itself.

Smith, complete with his famous red book, leads the charge; his presence lends an immediate authenticity to the Maximo output.

The Coast Is Always Changing, Apply Some Pressure, Once, A Glimpse, The Night I Lost My Head and Graffiti, all give reasons why you should buy their first album and their previous Missing Songs collection of B-sides and demos.

And Girls Who Play Guitars, Nosebleed and By The Money are all pretty good reasons to go buy their second long player.
