Paulo Nutini @ Carling Academy Birmingham

POOR old Paolo took a ribbing from motormouth Chris Moyles on Radio 1 shortly before this gig.

The Scot had recorded a live version of his huge hit Rewind.

Moyles, never one to mince his words, said it sounded like a drunk 94-year-old who had had both his front teeth knocked out.

It was all in fun, of course. Moyles is apparently a fan, and Paolo, in fairness, probably didn't sound his best.

He had clearly had one or two beers on Saturday night - but then so had most people in the packed crowd.

And there was no doubt, Paolo was on top form.

His 75-minute set included hits such as Jenny Don't Be Hasty, Last Request and Rewind (definitely a better version than on Radio One), plus his new single, January.

He'll soon be moving off into bigger venues, but the club-type surroundings of the Academy definitely suited his style.

By the way Paolo, if you are still thirsty next time you are in Brum, we'd like to buy you a drink!
