Scott Matthews @ Wulfrun Hall, Wolverhampton

THE problem with being a local lad is that everybody knows you.

So when Wolverhampton singer Scott Matthews returned to the city for the first time since the release of his acclaimed debut album Passing Stranger, it was more like a family reunion than a gig.

"Scott, I've got your Christmas presents for you," shouted one middle aged woman as he strummed the opening chords of his first song.

"Scott, do some Jeff Buckley," called another bloke, an old school friend perhaps.

And so it went on.

But in spite of the pressure of returning home a bona fide rock star, the 30-year-old Matthews kept his cool and a packed Wulfrun Hall was treated to a night of perfectly pitched blues-inspired indie rock.

With so many friends and family turning out in force, it was easy to feel a little excluded as the in-jokes came thick and fast.

But it's a minor complaint on a night of top draw local entertainment.
