Angela Gheorgiu @ Symphony Hall

ROMANIAN soprano Angela Gheorghiu certainly charmed the Symphony Hall Orchestra as the rapturous applause proved.

With a programme placing her firmly in the role of romantic heroine, she opted for popular choices such as Puccini's O mio babbino caro from Gianni Schicchi, Un bel di vedremo from Madame Butterfly and La Abanera from Bizet's Carmen.

Putting her heart and soul into it, Ms Gheorghiu makes a convincing heroine with a voice smooth of chocolate and rich as red wine.

Her choice to perform with a full orchestra, in this case the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera conducted by Ion Marin, was a curious one and did mean at times, particularly in her rendition of Lara's Granada, she was drowned out.

There was also disappointment that when her voice is so beautiful we did not hear more of it with a 90 minute programme featuring three orchestral pieces and a string of drawn out encores.
