Tom Paxton, Birmingham Town Hall

ISN'T it great when your heroes can still cut it after so many years?

Such is the case with legendary American folk singer Tom Paxton, who first performed at the Town Hall in 1967.

Happily, some things never change. And that goes for his wonderful ability to combine gentle romantic ballads with occasionally sharp, hard-hitting lyrics.

The latter was evident on an updated version of an old anti-war song, with Iraq replacing Vietnam, and a tribute to the 350 New York firefighters who died in 9/11.

He also rails against environmentally-destructive strip-mining in the US on There Goes The Mountain.

Paxton, with the excellent Robin Bullock for accompaniment, excels in more serene mode, including Jennifer And Kate, Dance In The Kitchen and How Beautiful Upon The Mountain, all from new album Comedians And Angels.

Folk anthems Rambling Boy and The Last Thing On My Mind provided the encore.
