Newton Faulkner, Carling Birmingham Academy

I TOOK my mum to this gig. That is the type of singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner is.

He purrs inoffensive, polite, middle-of-the-road anthems you can sing along to without your mother thinking badly of you.

But then my mum likes Westlife.

Yet in fairness to Mr Faulkner, he was more than that.

He was equally witty and charismatic in the breaks between songs from his hit album Hand Built By Robots.

Case in point was the unreadable projected lyrics for the crowd to join in with She's Got The Time.

The joke was enjoyed by all.

In a final flourish, SpongeBob SquarePants was followed by an inspiring acoustic solo of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody - refreshingly different to the predictable encores bands often roll out on tour.

He was better than I expected.

And my mum liked him too.
