Aspects Of Love, Birmingham Hippodrome

DAVID Essex turns back the clock to prove there's still plenty of life in the "old Romeo".

The former 70s pin-up, who turned 60 on the first day of rehearsals for this new production of Aspects of Love, is happily reunited with Andrew Lloyd Webber exactly 30 years after starring in Evita.

Here, David takes on the role of "shameless old Romeo" George Dillingham, a successful English painter.

That puts him in conflict with his young nephew Alex as both fall for the same woman - aspiring French actress Rose - over a span of 15 years.

David and co-star Tim Rogers are equally well matched in this slightly new look Aspects, which introduces touches of both steaminess and humour under Nikolai Foster's direction. Similarly, Shona Lindsay is a superb Rose.

Almost unique in musicals, Aspects has just one song of note - Love Changes Everything. But Shona gives a marvellous rendition of Anything But Lonely.

Performances continue until Saturday.
