Fairport Convention, Birmingham Town Hall

IN an ever changing world, you can rely on one thing - Fairport Convention just keep on touring.

The folk-rock pioneers are currently celebrating their 40th anniversary.

And, as Solihull fiddle player Ric Sanders announced: "This is the beginning of our journey towards our 50th anniversary."

Few of their fans will bemoan such continued longevity as they returned to the home of Acocks Green base guitarist Dave Pegg to end their latest UK tour. It was Peggy who happily revealed that former band member Dave Swarbrick had successfully undergone a lung transplant and was threatening to sing again.

Those vocal duties were largely taken up by Simon Nicol and Chris Leslie as Fairport delivered the full range of their musical heritage.

From the opening Richard Thomson song How Many Times, the five piece outfit reigned supreme from early offering The Banks of the Sweet Primroses to South Dakota to Manchester, which can be found on their new DVD.
