Sunday Night Live, Birmingham Hippodrome

GOOD old fashioned "variety" returned to the stage in Birmingham.

Sutton Coldfield businessman Karl Ward, together with Brum comedian Dave Ismay and production manager Ian Sandy, set themselves the task of trying to bring back variety by booking this ambitious show.

Veteran comics Frank Carson and Birmingham's Don Maclean headed a line-up that included the familiar magician, singer and dancers.

Don, a veteran of 35 pantos in his home town, produced a rib-tickling collection of jokes as compere, while madcap Irishman Frank topped the bill at the age of 82 with his usual quickfire gags.

The remainder of the evening was a mixture of cruise ship acts and local young talent comprising teenage Sutton singer Josh Tonks and Birmingham dance troupe Funki Feathers.1

Amazing, zany juggler Steve Rawlings, in particular, deserves a much bigger audience which only TV can provide.
