CBSO, Symphony Hall

AS HIS decade at the helm of the CBSO draws to a close, many will remember with affection the many choral works Sakari Oramo has conducted with such distinction.

The great works by Elgar, for intance. Especially searing accounts of Gerontius.

Last night came performances of JS Bach's Cantata No 21 and Brahms's German Requiem, a heavyweight programme that might not have reached the heights of previous choral concerts but was still mighty fine.

The Bach concerto was performed with astonishing delicacy, the Brahms requiem was a powerful and uplifting experience. Singing throughout - by both the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus and the soloists - was of the highest standard. Likewise the orchestral work, especially the haunting oboe at the beginning of the cantata.

Another concert of which Oramo can be proud.
