West Side Story, Walsall Operatic Society, Lichfield Garrick

IT'S now 50 years since the musical story of teenage gang warfare in Manhattan first hit the stage, but this production is fresh, vibrant and just as relevant in today's Britain.

The young cast were red hot as the Jets and Sharks bared their teeth and love blossomed, Romeo and Juliet style.

Charlotte Mills is a delight as Maria, sister of the Sharks' leader, who falls for Tony from the rival gang with tragic consequences. She forms a convincing bond with Phil James, playing Tony with equal skill.

Outstanding performances, too, from Craig Smith (Riff), Paul Bickerton (Bernardo) and Helen Watts (Anita).

Michelle Baker's choreography is electric at times, while Alex Walker, musical director, brings the very best out of the orchestra.

Produced and directed by Richard Poynton, this gripping musical runs to tomorrow night.
