RAF Massed Voluntary Bands, Symphony Hall

OVER 150 bandsmen took the stage and made sure that Birmingham celebrated the 90th anniversary celebrations of the Royal Air Force in style with an exhilarating show of military and popular music.

The wide repertoire was played in first-class manner by the massed bands, who unlike the prestigious central professional bands of the RAF, are part-time musicians, some civilians.

The three-hour show received a standing ovation from the audience who included many exRAF servicemen.

The band showed their versatility ranging from stirring military music to numbers from films, opera, West End musicals and wartime favourites. Singer Belinda Evans added to the show with her exceptionally fine voice.

The volunteer bandsmen deliberately gave the concert a more informal touch than their professional brothers, but the military tradition and precision remained.
