The Beach Boys, NIA Academy

WITH Arctic temperatures outside and a muted atmosphere inside the draughty, cavernous, not quite full NIA it seemed that The Beach Boys faced an uphill struggle to bring some Californian sunshine to Birmingham.

But with the only original band member in the shape of Mike Love, those sunny songs thawed an initial frosty reception and a medley of surfing classics encouraged fans to their feet.

The eight-piece outfit includes longtime Beach Boy Bruce Johnston on keyboards and guitarist David Marks, who featured on the first four Beach Boys albums in the early sixties.

This is his first British tour with the band.

Songwriter and Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson's solo shows may get all the critical plaudits but you get more songs for your money from 67-year-old Mike Love's outfit.

On stage for two hours and 40 minutes, they raced through the numbers.

The encore summed up what they hoped to bring to the show - Good Vibrations and Fun Fun Fun. And they succeeded.
