We Are Scientists, Birmingham Academy

IT TOOK me a little while to work out what was missing from this gig - choruses.

Everything about this show seemed right for the first couple of numbers, but before long it all melted into one well-produced but less than memorable song.

The American trio would probably shine at a festival playing for 40 minutes.

But, at twice that long, this sell-out concert seemed stretched for a band who have just released their second album. They just don't have the material.

The Scientists do their best to jolly things along, and band members Keith Murray and Chris Cain do a really nice line in between song banter, while Lethal Enforcer, After Hours and It's A Hit were catchy enough.

But show closer The Great Escape's brilliance just served to show up the rest of the gig.

One great single, a couple of decent ones and a lot of songs that sound depressingly like Arctic Monkeys and Killers B-sides aren't really enough.
