Edwyn Collins, Glee Club, Birmingham

EDWYN Collins was given a rapturous ovation from the Glee Club after finishing his set with the brilliant 1995 hit A Girl Like You, because they'd never met a singer recovering from a brain haemorrhage before.

Three years ago the Scottish singer was unable to walk, talk or even play the guitar so when he limped on to stage for the first date of his tour a sympathetic cheer rang out.

But after an hour and half of fantastic music the crowd was saluting his talent, not just giving a sick man a gee up.

As soon as he opened his mouth it was obvious his deep, brooding and sardonic singing voice had survived intact.

Edwyn was joined on stage by the former Aztec Camera front man Roddy Frame and a fine backing band.

From the tender Home Again to a brilliant version of Orange Juice's 1983 hit Rip It Up, great songs kept on coming.
