Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Birmingham Academy

NICK Cave had a packed Birmingham Academy eating from his hands as enthusiastically as the pigeons in Trafalgar Square.

Although he has now been treading the boards almost as long as Bruce Forsyth, the more melancholy approach in recent years has seen Cave and his loyal Bad Seeds backing band attract a more mainstream following.

The energetic set was based largely around the new Dig Lazarus Dig album but with plenty from his extensive back-catalogue to appease those who have admired Cave since his wild days with The Birthday Party.

Red Right Hand, Deanna and Tupelo were delivered with precision at a sticky Academy, with Cave towelling himself down between songs.

Now 50, Cave is as relaxed on stage as a vicar in the pulpit and the Academy congregation proved an appreciative audience as the epic Stagger Lee brought the curtain down on a great night.
