South Pacific Lichfield, Operatic Society, Lichfield Garrick

THIS lively production of the much-loved Rodgers & Hammerstein musical is proving a big hit at the box office, and it's easy to see why.

The story of love and action on South Pacific islands during wartime is handled with great skill by an enterprising company who show great team work throughout.

Heading a fine cast, Jo McCallister is excellent as Ensign Nellie Forbush, the US Navy nurse who falls in love with the mysterious French planter, Emile De Becque.

She has a real sparkle about her, sings well, and benefits from having an outstanding partner in Nigel Lowe, impressive in the role of De Becque. The pair excel in Some Enchanted Evening.

Splendid contributions, too, from Deb Middleton, playing the crafty Tonkinese trader, Bloody Mary, Johnny Johnson, who provides some terrific comedy as scheming sailor Luther Billis, and Dan Anketell.

Produced and directed by Julie Mallaband, with Sarah Clark's choreography and David Esto's musical direction, South Pacific continues until tomorrow.
