The Thirst & Kav, The Place I Love, Digbeth

HAVING supported The Rolling Stones and The Sex Pistols there's a lot of raucous hype surrounding The Thirst.

The Brixton quartet don't disappoint as they thrash through a near perfect neo-ska-punk set full of tracks sure to make up a debut album in the near future. Sail Away and Mr Everything are the stand outs but in some way they are eclipsed by the support.

Kav, the former Happy Mondays guitarist, leads his 'band of pirates' on a journey that makes no effort to conform to the modern indie sound.

Heavy bluegrass riffs cast against a plaintive Lou Reed-esque vocal set them apart from anything about at the moment.

The only problem is that their grunge-folk will probably only be appreciated by American audiences.

Whatever, The Lizard King and Killing Yourself are stylishly bluesy while final song and current EP Blaggers'n'Liars peers down like a mature but broody Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
