Tribute To The Swing Era, Town Hall, Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM'S restored Town Hall made its first contribution to Birmingham International Jazz Festival and heralded the return of a Big Band playing the great sounds of swing.

The super music of Garry Allcock and the Midland All-Stars Big Band brought back to a near-capacity audience, memories of the top bands that had graced the Town Hall stage 50 years and more ago.

Not least to Garry himself ,who recalled his visit as a 17-year old to hear the great Stan Kenton Orchestra. Gary's superb drumming in Ted Heath's Hawaiian War Chant was one of the show's highlights.

The two-hour tribute show featured the best of the great sounds from the swing era of the 30s 40s and 50s.

The Allcock outfit was in top form in all sections.
