FOR decades now, the Dilke has always remained one of the better pubs in the Walsall area despite undergoing changes in ownership.
Some years on since my last visit, it's now part of the Whitbread Group.
Last time I thought the place was looking smart and it's always benefitted from a countryside feel and large beer garden area.
But it seemed particularly stylish this time, the decor and spacious seating configuration a real bonus, and almost at odds with the fare on offer.
This is not to knock the menu, just that what's offered is pretty "safe" and pub staple.
No specials or anything particularly adventurous - but then again nothing too pricey.
While some of the starters looked enticing, myself and a couple of old friends chose from mains which went from steaks and burgers to pastas, roasts and such dishes as duck and lamb shank at the higherpriced end.
I was in the mood for sweet and sour chicken and while it didn't disappoint, it wasn't far removed from a supermarket ready-meal.
Paul was well pleased with his chicken makhani - high praise indeed for a big curry fan.
Pam's roast beef dish featured generous portions of tasty meat scoring higher than her slightly limp vegetables.
For dessert, my chocolate torte was hardly the healthier option but it was delicious.
My friends' apple crumble and cream and clotted cream cheesecake were also winners.
This pub grub won't spring any surprises.
But what you get is well done and service remains friendly and efficient.
There's also a decent range of wines and beers.
The big plus has to be the Dilke's ambiance and atmosphere, which is convivial to dining whether you want a pleasant time with friends, a loved one or a family meal out.
* Verdict
PLUS: Attractive and welcoming, with a range of diners/drinkers from young families to elderly couples. There's an outside drinking/eating area and the food is of reasonable value.
MINUS:Nothing out of the ordinary if you want something a bit special.
