Hacks bid farewell to the dark ages at Fort Dunlop's Glass Lounge

THE GLASS LOUNGE

FORT DUNLOP

ERDINGTON

TIMES have changed since we journalists scuttled off into dark, smoky pubs at lunchtime to knock back a few pints of bitter and scoff the occasional packet of pork scratchings.

Now, we’re more likely to sip a latte at our desk than disappear into the sort of hostelry with a carpet sticky enough to make you wonder whether you’ll ever make it back to the door. But here at Fort Dunlop – headquarters of BPM Media (Midlands) – is a watering hole that would tempt me to take a screen break.

The Glass Lounge is a smart, modern place with a good buzz that offers a range of beers and a decent menu at a reasonable price.

I took Anita, a PR contact, for lunch and it was very pleasant indeed – nothing fancy, just simple food prepared with care.

The doorstep sandwich that I ordered came on good bread with good-quality chicken and salad and a plate of crisp chips. The fact that some remained uneaten reflected the generosity of the portions rather than a negative reflection of its appeal.

Anita ate chicken wrapped in Parma ham that she said was moist, tender and flavoursome and which came with a green salad and potato salad.

I drank a pint of lager while my guest drank J20 and the bill came to £16.

All in all, good value, I think.
