Rave reviews for Birmingham Opera Company's King Idomeneo

Birmingham Opera Company perform King Idomeneo.

A DISUSED Birmingham rubber factory was the unlikely setting of one of Mozart’s greatest operas.

Crowds packed out the Sherbourne Building in Ladywood and assembled on mats to watch the Birrmingham Opera Company stage King Idomeneo.

The three-and-a-half hour production by Graham Vick has been receiving rave reviews from critics who have praised the “wonderful” solo set-pieces of Act II, acoustics, and choruses.

The company, which prefers to find real Midlands characters instead of holding casting calls, features Paul Nilon as Idomeneo, Mark Wilde as a vibrant Idamante and Anna Dennis as an appealing Ilia, with Baddie Electra played by Donna Bateman.

Orange trees, volcanic slopes and blue lights had completely transformed the grey, shabby factory on Icknield Square, by Stuart Nunn.

Idomeneo is repeated on alternate days until August 23 at 7pm (Advance booking at the Birmingham Rep box office: 0121 236 4455).
