Pride & Prejudice (U)

IT is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good girlfriend must be in want of a DVD to please her with.

So here comes best actress Oscar nominee Keira Knightley as Elizabeth in Pride & Prejudice.

It's now 65 years since Laurence Olivier played Darcy and ten years on from Andrew Davies's seminal BBC TV adaptation, Pride and Prejudice.

But debut director Joe Wright bravely brings another beautifully made alternative to the silver screen, earning Oscar nominations for best score, costume and art direction. The weak link is Matthew Macfadyen as Darcy.
