Serenity (15)

IT'S not easy to breathe any freshness into the sci-fi genre, but Buffy creator Joss Whedon has pulled it off with Serenity.

It's an expensive-looking adaptation of his own TV series Firefly (cancelled after 11 episodes), with the action set 500 years ahead on board a transport ship.

The violence is credible but not too excessive, the script is often very funny and the cast is young yet mature - in short, this is entertainment with a capital 'E'.

Some of the action sequences are genuinely thrilling, with San Antonio ballerina Summer Glau (River) kicking butts better than any woman since Kill Bill's Uma Thurman.

Well, she is an emotionally unstable lass with a telepathic nature.

And, because River possesses dangerous secrets about the all-powerful Universal Alliance buried deep in her subconscious, everyone is after her! DVD extras deleted and extended scenes with director commentary.
