The New World (12)

EVEN fans of writer-director Terrence Malick (Badlands/Days of Heaven/The Thin Red Line) will struggle to watch The New World in one sitting.

It's an almost dreamlike exploration of the effect of settlers reaching the James River in Virginia in 1607, and of native beauty Pocahontas ('playful one') eventually making her own journey into the unknown to England.

The cast includes Colin Farrell (Capt John Smith), new Batman star Christian Bale (John Rolfe) and the mesmerising 15-year-old Q'Orianka Kilcher, whose family roots are Peruvian.

All are given precious few lines to speak and even less to do, so just sit back and enjoy the Oscar-nominated landscape cinematography.
