North Country (15)

NORTH Country is a fictionalised account of a woman miner who made history in a sexual harassment case.

Charlize Theron, a best actress candidate at this year's Oscars, plays Josey Aimes, a single mother with two children by different fathers.

Aiming to earn her own living for the first time, she returns to her hometown prepared to work in an iron mine alongside friend and truck-driving union rep Glory (Frances McDormand).

Though socially righteous, North Country falls a touch flat, sitting somewhere between Julia Roberts' more uplifting Erin Brockovich and the drudge of the all-star John Travolta film A Civil Action.

It's directed by New Zealand-born Niki Caro, whose Whale Rider is another tale of feminine resistance.

The DVD extras include nine deleted scenes.
