The Wind That Shakes The Barley (15)

DIRECTED by Nuneaton-born veteran Ken Loach, this year's Palm D'Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival is actually a disappointment.

Workers from field and country form volunteer guerrilla armies to face Britain's 'Black and Tan' squads ruthlessly trying to block Ireland's independence.

Despite a treaty being signed to end the ensuing bloodshed, families begin to fight amongst themselves as well as with the enemy.

But this is no repeat of Loach's Land and Freedom. Although the spine of the story is profoundly shocking, the film itself is overlong, erratic and unmoving.

Extras include director commentary and a stills gallery.
