The Golden Compass ( pg)

THIS adaptation of Philip Pullman's Northern Lights plays like a dismembered novel reconstructed Harry Potter-style in dot-to-dot fashion.

Though visually adventurous, especially with the stunning polar bear fight sequence, it's slow to start and can only build up to a tepid ending.

The story is about an 'alethiometer' which, in a story blending science, religion and philosophy, it could hold the key to... EVERYTHING!

The film's biggest surprise is that A-list stars Nicole Kidman (Marisa Coulter) and new James Bond Daniel Craig (Lord Asriel) are given so little to do.

The Golden Compass is also available to buy for £22.99 or as a special edition DVD for £24.99 (Bluray £29.99), with extras including 11 behind-the-scenes featurettes.
