Leatherheads (PG)

GEORGE Clooney and Renee Zellweger star in this sepia-toned 1920s' screwball comedy set in the struggling world of professional American football.

As veteran player Jimmy 'Dodge' Connelly, Clooney believes that signing Princeton athlete Carter Rutherford (John Krasinski) on a Beckham-style mega-bucks deal could be the answer to his team's prayers. But he reckons without Chicago Tribune journalist Lexie Littleton (Zellweger) exposing Rutherford's war record.

If Leatherheads was meant to be a love triangle drama it all ends up rather square with Krasinski barely given a look-in next to Gorgeous George.

Leatherheads works best as a still-relevant illustration of how paying athletes big money can drive a sport on.
