Ghost Town (12)
IMAGINE a dental comedy crossed with Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased) and you’ll quickly get to the root of Ricky Gervais’ latest bid to conquer Hollywood.
Trouble is, like all trips to the dentists, this isn’t entirely pain free since his first leading man performance falls as horribly flat as his monotone hair dye is mesmerisingly-lifeless.
Gervais does, of course, have some fine comedic moments as Dr Bertram Pincus.
But certainly not enough to carry the whole movie.
Spanglish star Tea Leoni is shortchanged as love interest Gwen, while even the usually ultra-reliable Greg Kinnear (As Good As It Gets) struggles to hack it as the ghost of the late Frank Herlihy.
Having been saved from the Grim Reaper himself, Dr Pincus comes back from the dead able to see ghosts. But they all want something from him. And especially Frank.
Directed and co-written by David Koepp, the writer of Zathura and director of Stir of Echoes, Ghost Town is as thin as a piece of floss.
