Red Cliff (15) ***
After making blockbuster Hollywood films like Mission: Impossible II, director John Woo takes the big bucks philosophy back home to make this the most expensive Chinese language film ever.
The overlong 139-minute epic is set in 208AD when prime minister Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) has become a tyrant. It’s often spectacular, but the best touches are details like weather forecasts and battle tactics rather than the director’s trademark slow motion combat sequences. Also out to buy for £19.99 (Blu-ray £29.99).
