OPENING on the day of Birmingham Pride's annual ball, this is an admirably tender and often very funny road movie about a man wanting a sex-change operation.
Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman earned herself a deserved best actress Oscar nomination as Bree, a pre-operative man who wants to be turned into a woman. But matters are complicated when Bree learns about a long-lost son.
Transamerica is a film about hope springing eternal, raging hormones, parent-child relationships and the general aimlessness of characters like Bree - "ten years in college and not a single degree".
He can't make and keep ordinary decisions never mind such a life changing one.
