Failure To Launch (12A)

EVEN allowing for The Rock's sci-fi mess Doom, released last December and out on DVD on Monday, few movie titles have ever dared to tempt fate as much as this one.

Happily, it's not a total dud, though no more impressive than other recent middling US romantic comedies from The Family Stone to Rumour Has It and Just Good Friends.

Directed by Tom Dey (Showtime/ Shanghai Noon), the title comes from the increasing trend for thirtysomething men like Tripp (Matthew McConaughey) to stay living at home with fed-up mums like Sue (Kathy Bates).

Cue her secret weapon - shapely man-tamer Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) who is supposed to house train unknowing men to the point that they up sticks and leave the nest.

Naturally things don't go to plan and romantic sparks complicate her plans.

Some good, straight-talking support from Zooey Deschanel (Elf/ Almost Famous) as Kit is negated by a bizarre use of animals throughout.
