Junebug (15)

THE name Amy Adams might not ring any loud bells, but the 30-year-old Italian-born actress is the 20th and final star from the 2006 Oscar nominations to appear on Midlands' screens.

Nominated in the best supporting actress category alongside British winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener), she plays pregnant Ashley in director Phil Morrison's exploration of life and family values in North Carolina.

Newly-married art gallery owner Madeline (Embeth Davidtz) visits her husband's family during a business trip, but her brio threatens to cast a shadow over the in-laws.

Though never boiling over like Mike Leigh's Secrets & Lies and having a tendency to linger too long on some shots like the inflation of an airbed, this is a thoughtful, independent journey for those who enjoy the non-Hollywood side of American filmmaking.

It's certainly a far cry from last December's comparatively histrionic Sarah Jessica Parker 'comedy', The Family Stone.
