Take The Lead (12A)

FANS of the TV-led craze for dancing might well be tempted out to see this story based on the New York work of Pierre Dulaine.

Antonio Banderas takes on the role and, dressed to impress, he has some early success convincing the school head (Alfre Woodward) that he's the man for the job.

But, once his early lesson about good manners is over, the story becomes increasingly unbelievable, contrived and disjointed.

Debut directed by Liz Friedlander, the competition finale is ludicrous and the 117-minute film fizzles out during the seemingly endless closing credits.

It's also riddled with cliches and, unlike Dulaine's real work, uses 'kids' almost old enough to collect a pension.
