Little Fish (15)

THIS is a comparatively low-budget, independent-flavoured Australian love story.

Farscape director Rowan Woods has assembled an impressive cast led by Sam Neill (Jurassic Park/The Dish), Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix) and Martin Henderson (The Ring).

And the sub-Shakespearean story of Tracy Heart, a 32-year-old heroin addict trying to rebuild her life despite the male complications around her, carries hopes of a satisfyingly meaty chew to rank alongside Geoffrey Rush's 2002 film Lantana.

But the expectation is dashed over 113 increasingly slow minutes.

Though admirable for being so relelentlessly gritty, Little Fish is also high on tedium, lacking in both sympathetic characters and thrills. Showing at Cineworld Broad St all week, Warwick Arts Centre (Fri-Sun) and MAC (Mon-Thu).
