Stick It (PG)

THIS is a well-choreographed movie about overcoming adversity in gymnastics.

The moves are impressively captured by director of photography Daryn Okada.

But Jeff Bridges is not on the best form of his career as the gruff, inspirational coach Burt Vickerman, hardly surprising given the cliched nature of a script which also changes direction unexpectedly.

Girls will enjoy the pace and editing of the film which has a pleasing performance from Missy Peregrym as Haley Graham, a teen rebel who once quit her beloved sport in the middle of a major championship and now has to learn all about team spirit.

Trying to turn this into a broader vehicle for female empowerment is a harder sell for writer-director Jessica Bendinger (Bring It On).
