After The Wedding (15)

QUITE why Pan's Labyrinth didn't beat its solid rival The Lives of Others in this year's best foreign film Oscar category is hard to fathom.

But at least this Danish entry - Efter Brylluppet - didn't win.

Believing a businessman is willing to fund his work, Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen returns to Denmark from working with Indian orphans, only to become unexpectedly invited to a society wedding where the bride has too many personal connections for comfort.

There's a powerful human story at the heart of writer-director Susanne Biers' 124-minute film.

But with coincidence piled upon coincidence between a flimsy pair of Indian bookends too much emotion drains away.
