The Tiger's Tail

DIRECTOR John Boorman is back in harness with The General star Brendan Gleeson, but this is a somewhat schizophrenic study of modern Ireland's search for identity.

In a film rated 18 for a scene of sexual violence, the story follows Liam O'Leary who is haunted by his own twin (sometimes played by his brother Frank working as a body double).

Real life son Brian Gleeson also stars - as Liam's son Connor.

After a bright opening, the film nosedives into a complex yet wholly unconvincing exploration of the relationships between rich and poor, work and family, man and wife, son and mother, father and son and brother and brother.

Complete with insights into Irish traffic jams, health service worries and redevelopment plans, this is frankly disappointing given the supporting cast includes Kim Cattrall, Sinead Cusack and Ciaran Hinds.

But it's thankfully never as bad as Barry Levinson's 2001 Irish flop, An Everlasting Piece.
