Tales From Earthsea

MADE by master filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki, Japanese classics Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle are real animation favourites with my young children.

But I won't be volunteering for second helpings in order to take them to see this effort, debut directed by Hayao's son, Goro Miyazaki.

At 115 minutes, the Japanese language version I saw with subtitles felt like it was lasting forever, but there is a dubbed version with Timothy Dalton and Willem Dafoe.

Though based on the books of Ursula Le Guin and offering an alternative take on the wizardry of Harry Potter, Goro just hasn't got his father's magical ability to bridge the international gap.

Showing only at Cineworld Broad St.
