The Last Legion

THE latest spin on the Excalibur/Arthurian legend details the fall of the great Roman empire.

Newly crowned, the 12-year-old Caesar (Thomas Sangster), is held captive on the island of Capri, with his loyal teacher Ambrosinus (Sir Ben Kingsley) and legionnaire Aurelius (Colin Firth) to give him counsel.

After 300 and Lord of the Rings, debut director Doug Lefler's (Xena) fight scenes seem rather hammy.

And that's despite Ashwarya Rai's sword-wielding Byzantine warrior character Mira offering a clear nod to The Mask of Zorro.

Children over ten who are interested in history and action should enjoy the swords. But the many stabbings leave little to the imagination.
