The Kite Runner

THIS is the best Hollywood-abroad movie since the Oscar-nominated Babel.

Adapted from Khaled Hosseini's bestseller by David Benioff, The Kite Runner is directed by Marc Forster (Finding Neverland/Monster's Ball) who takes several complex themes and plays them out through the lives of two youngsters in 1978.

Amir (Zekiria Ebrahimi) and best friend Hassan (Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada) are oblivious to Afghanistan's power struggle when a kite-flying tournament and an act of betrayal has a disparate effect on their lives.

Twenty years later, Amir (now played by Khalid Abdalla) has become an Americanised author while the Taliban rules his homeland with an iron fist - even banning kite flying.

The film opens on Boxing Day.
